Disciple Bible Study - Transforming Lives through Bible Study
Disciple groups consist of twelve members and a leader and meet weekly for 2 to 2.5 hours for a period of 34 weeks (nine months). Each participant makes a commitment to daily preparation (30-45 minutes per day) and weekly attendance at and full participation in the group study sessions.
Disciple aims at transformation, not just information. Disciple calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God’s Word, and to be changed by God’s Word.
Consider this opportunity to read and study the Bible in a small, committed group and be challenged in your discipleship. If you are interested, please check the worship attendance registration form or contact the church office, 703-430-2203.
Below are descriptions of the four Disciple study sessions:
Disciple I - Becoming Disciples through Bible Study
Disciple I: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study is an approach to Bible study that emphasizes disciplined reading of and listening to Scripture. It results in biblically nourished persons committed to lives as disciples. During the course of 34 weeks, Disciple groups move through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. All Disciple Bible study participants will read more than 70% of the Bible. The Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story.
Disciple II - Into the Word, Into the World
Those successfully completing Disciple I dig deeper into selected portions of Scripture - Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts in Disciple II. Emphasis shifts from the broad view to the deeper, more detailed view. Participants focus on the importance of Bible study as a grounding for discipleship in the church and in the world.
Disciple III - Remember Who You Are
The third study in the Disciple series covers the prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures and the letters of Paul in the Christian Scriptures. It focuses on the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. This study continues the emphasis of the relationship of servanthood and discipleship begun in Disciple I.
Disciple IV - Under the Tree of Life
The fourth phase of Disciple concentrates on the Writings in the Old Testament - Ruth, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations and Daniel. New Testament Scriptures include the Gospel of John; 1, 2, 3 John; James; Jude; and Revelation. Emphasis on the Psalms as Israel’s hymnbook and prayer book leads naturally to an emphasis on worship in the study. And present through the whole study is the sense of living toward completion - toward the climax of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in the Revelation.
Under The Tree of Life continues the philosophy and assumptions, goals and ideals of the Disciple program. It continues to call clergy and laity to serious, disciplined Bible study that will result in development of biblically nourished servant-leaders.
