Taking Church Outside the Walls

July 25, 2019

Galilee’s choir director Jordan Markwood is traveling in the Dominican Republic this week with Renewed Hope Missions. This is his eighth trip to the Dominican Republic, where he is working at a local church supported by the Methodist denomination, La Iglesia Evangélica Dominicana.

The main place Jordan is doing ministry is a town called Cuesta Arena outside of Santiago de los Caballeros, which is where he is staying with the pastor, Sairy Marte, and her family.

It should come as no surprise that the work Jordan is doing involves music.

“Today we went to Cuesta Arena and worked with the younger kids in the morning. We are using recorders but that is a challenge with a huge range in age and attention span. I’m going to try something a little different tomorrow and see how it goes. Then we played games, colored, read books, etc. for a while. After lunch we practiced a song with the praise group from Cuesta Arena to prepare for church on Sunday.”

“Afterwards we just sang through other praise songs that most people were familiar with. In the evening we went to a bible study in Villa Liberación which is another community the church works with. I love to see how the church goes outside its walls to work with the people.”

We love to see it, too, Jordan! Safe travels!
