Backpack Buddies Survey

April 27, 2023

Our thanks goes to everyone at Galilee who supports Backpack Buddies. We want to share with you the results of a survey that was sent out to the schools we serve.

We sent out 476 surveys to nine schools and received 136 surveys back, a return rate of 29.4%.

The top line result? Kids who receive the meals we pack are performing better academically, finding it easier to concentrate, and feel healthier than they did before we stepped in to help.

Take a bow, Galilee. Our Backpack Buddies kids appreciate what we do because we are making a HUGE difference in their lives and their education.

You can see the full survey results here.

As a result of the survey, we will make several changes in the food we distribute. Apple sauce, pudding, and crackers will be replaced with fresh fruit, cereal, fruit snacks, and Cheez-Its. Chef Boyardee pasta, which has been the second most expensive food item on offer, is also being replaced. Respondents says it’s their least favorite item and they’re not eating it. Finally, traditional mac and cheese boxes will be replaced with an easier-to-prepare cup of mac and cheese that’s microwaveable.

Some of these changes will increase our program expenses, but we will work on fundraising events to ensure that the money is there for our next school term. It’s worth it!

We have already begun implementing changes, but if you’re involved with the Backpack Buddies program in any way, your feedback is valued. If you have thoughts or questions, please email Felicia R. Johnson, Director of Service Ministries or call the Galilee office at (703) 430-2203.

When you help with Backpack Buddies, you are being God’s hands and feet in our community.
