Galilee’s parking lot became a neighborhood Block Party on July 10 as families gathered for an evening of food, music, games, and community.
Children bounced in inflatables, families posed at the photo booth, and neighbors enjoyed popcorn, hot dogs, snowcones, and tacos from Lupita’s Taqueria. Along the way, they connected with local organizations offering practical health resources and family support.
The Block Party is part of Galilee’s Community Health Days initiative, made possible through a $5,000 grant from the Virginia United Methodist Foundation and the generous gifts of Galilee members. The series supports the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of our community through free screenings, practical health education, and connections to local resources.
Providers praised the event and expressed interest in returning to future Community Health Days in the fall (including mental health training In September and a flu preparedness event at Trunk or Treat). Participants lined up for health information and giveaways, while grooving to the DJ and enjoying the awesome photo booth, which were favorites with families throughout the evening.
Special thanks goes to David, Anne, and Ben Stewart, whose tireless work behind the scenes helped make the Block Party such a success, as well as the Stephen Ministers who showed great support. Thanks to all the Galilee members who came, too!
At Galilee, we believe caring for our neighbors means caring for the whole person. Community Health Days create opportunities to build friendships, strengthen families, and connect people with resources that help them thrive.
The health partners who participated at the Block Party included:
Our next Community Health Day event is a two part mental health training: Sept 18 Adult Mental Health at Crossroads UMC; Sept 20 Youth Mental Health at Galilee.
