Students of all ages have been handed a tough situation with this pandemic. Across the world, young people ended their last school year at home and most are still doing school from home now, almost half way through the current school year. It saddens me to think of the experiences they are missing and the isolation that could easily get the better of them. We all share this feeling one way or another.
While it is easy to go to that dark place full of disappointment and frustration, my purpose today is to tell you that our Youth Ministry is alive and active! Ours is a story of determination…and creativity.
At Galilee, the mission for our Youth Ministry is to support students as they develop and grow in their individual faith and prepare for life after high school. Meaningful life!
We have been meeting twice a month using Zoom for Sunday Night Youth Group. We share news, play games, and dig into the Word of God.
We are also slowly introducing in-person events. A week ago, a group of middle schoolers got together in the gym, masked and distanced to catch up with acquaintances and become better friends. It was so nice to laugh together in person. Our church’s forward thinking to have built a spacious and safe gymnasium has once again reaped rewards.
Youth@Galilee families also participated in an outreach activity recently. They connected through the mail with others who needed to hear an uplifting word from a friend.
Additionally—and to show we are the light the world needs—our youth will be assembling luminaries to place outside their homes on December 21st. This will bring light to the darkest day of the year.
During this time, we are not able to use our Youth Center for events because it does not allow sufficient distancing. So we are busy giving it an overdue face lift! It will be better than ever when we are able to gather there again.
And soon, we will start planning for 2021 Confirmation.
