The words of a dying man are always taken seriously. They are recorded so that people not present at the moment of death might know what the man said. We value “final words” as words of tremendous significance. This is so very true for the words that Our Lord spoke from the cross.
For Lent this year, we are lifting up Christ’s dying utterances in a worship series called FINAL WORDS. Traditionally there are seven phrases that Christ is said to have spoken from the cross:
“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
“Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
“Behold your son…Behold your mother.”
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
“I thirst.”
“It is finished.”
“Into your hands I commit my spirit.”
