Volunteer

"A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed" - Proverbs 11:25

At Galilee, we encourage volunteering in church and in the community. We believe that God blesses those who, like the apostle Peter, step out of the boat to follow Christ. You don’t need to know how to walk on water! Just take the first steps and Christ will handle the hard stuff.

You have the gifts to be a great volunteer—but not every role is going to be a good fit. Take a Spiritual Gifts Assessment to get an idea where your real strengths lie.

Below, find some ways to plug in to the energy that comes with giving of yourself.

Sunday Mornings

AV Booth

A position in the AV booth is a great place to serve the church, learn the latest sound and video technology, and enjoy a different experience of worship.

We are always looking for adults and responsible teens. Training is available for soundboard, livestream, and video equipment. Join the AV team and learn a valuable skill. For more information, please contact Robert Holland.

Sunday Morning Ushers and Greeters

Ushers and Greeters provide a welcoming experience to the people, new and old, who enter our church and participate in services.

Most Sundays, Galilee requires two greeters at the front door and four ushers to distribute bulletins, communion elements, and collect and present the offering. is an important role of our ushers and greeters. Sign up to be an usher or greeter in September. For information about signing a child up as an acolyte, click here.

Sunday Morning Sanctuary Flowers

The Altar Flowers that you see in worship each week are sponsored by generous Galilee members and attenders just like you, often in honor of an anniversary or a loved one.

You can order flowers online on the Sponsor Flowers page of this website.

The cost is $40 for a mixed bouquet and $50 for a dozen red roses. If  you need help or more information, please email info@galileeumc.org or call the office at 703-430-2203 and we’ll help you out.

Sunday Morning Fellowship Hour

Sunday morning fellowship in the lobby after the 10am service is a great way to catch up with friends or meet new ones. It’s always better when the coffee is hot and there is fresh fruit, donuts, or other nibbles.

You can help! Our small groups  rotate to take the lead in hosting Sunday Morning Fellowship Hour.

If your group would like to sponsor fellowship, we’d welcome that! Please contact Kathi at 571-439-9948.

During the Week

Altar Guild

The mission of the Altar Guild is to provide the best possible environment for worship.

This includes preparing the sanctuary for regular services, baptisms, funerals, and holidays. We make sure the banners, altar cloths, and Bible markers are appropriate for each season. We care for the plants in the sanctuary and order flowers for regular services, Christmas, and Easter. We prepare for and clean up after church services and provide the Communion elements. We are blessed with the care of those items that have been set apart and consecrated to sacred use.

For more information or to volunteer, email Nancy Epperson.

Backpack Buddies

Our award-winning Backpack Buddies program helps feed hungry 631 students during the school year by sending food home on the weekends. You can drop in to help in our pantry on the first and third Sundays of the month at 11am to pack meal bags.

We also schedule packing at other times throughout the week. If you have a group or community organization that would like to come pack, sign up on the 2026-27 Community Packing Schedule.

We often need new drivers to deliver food. Delivery days and times are flexible. Email Felicia to volunteer. Felicia can help you if you’d like to volunteer in any other way, too.

Children's Ministry

Galilee’s Children’s Ministry frequently has need for volunteers. Here are our current needs:

Worship Acolytes. We’re looking for upper elementary-aged and middle school volunteers to light worship candles at the beginning of our service and then extinguish them towards the end. If you’d like your kids to participate as acolytes, sign up here.

Community Planning Team

The Community Planning Team is responsible for creating events and outreach opportunities that bring people together and connect Galilee to our neighbors.

Interested in planning and running fun seasonal events meant to build community? Contact Lisa Collins to volunteer or just touch base with an idea for an event.

Facilities Support

Are you handy with tools and paint brushes?  There are a number of areas where the Trustees need support for repairs and ongoing maintenance of our building.

We aim to have a couple volunteer work days per year. Keep an ear out for announcements or contact:  trustees@galileeumc.org.

Funeral Reception

As a ministry to our Galilee families, we provide a reception free of charge following funeral services at the church. By providing this reception, Galilee takes a worry off the shoulders of a grieving family. It is a hands-on way you can be of assistance to people who have suffered loss.

Volunteers have the option of providing the food, drinks, or paper goods for the reception or helping with set up/clean up of the event. Simply send your email address indicating interest to info@galileeumc.org and you will receive a link to a Sign Up Genius whenever we plan a funeral at the church. You choose how you wish to help, if you are available.

Leadership Committees

Have the gift of leadership and organization?

We recruit every fall for help on our standing Leadership Committees (Trustees, Staff-Parish, and Finance).

Email to our serving chairpersons (listed on the Leadership tab here) or talk to Pastor Mike for more information.

Small Group Leader

Much of our spiritual growth happens in small groups that meet weekly or monthly.

Are you dreaming of a new small group? Looking for a particular kind of study that isn’t offered at Galilee? Maybe now is the time for you to step up and lead a new small group! You don’t have to do it alone. We’ll walk beside you and show you how it’s done.

Email Pastor Mike with your idea and we can get the ball rolling.

Youth Group

Research shows that teens and young adults who have at least 5 trusted adults in their lives beyond their own parents are more likely to thrive and stay connected to their faith.

You can be a part of that support by volunteering with Youth Group. We need adults to help out on Sunday nights, to chaperone events and trips, and more.

Contact Lisa Collins for more information.
In the Community

Loudoun Cares

Galilee wants to empower all Christians to “go and be” the church outside of our sanctuary doors. There’s a wide mission field out there with tons of opportunities to model the way of Jesus Christ.

We partner with Loudoun Cares, an organization that serves as an umbrella of programs and ministries to help our neighbors stand up and thrive, to match volunteers with good causes.

Check out the Loudoun Cares volunteer page to see where you can help out.
