This Sunday, June 9, is Jason Duley’s last worship service as Senior Pastor of Galilee United Methodist Church. He has served here for ten years and we will miss his intelligence, his good humor, and his deep and practical faith.

Jason grew up in Northern Virginia as a “preacher’s kid” in United Methodist congregations in Springfield and Alexandria. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 1991 with a double-major in English and Education, and later from Duke University with a Master of Divinity in 1999.  In 2006 he completed a two-year post-graduate leadership program as a Lewis Fellow of the Center for Church Leadership at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. 

He is married to the most valuable staff member in the Galilee office, Jennifer Duley, who has served as AV Director and our chief office administrator. Interestingly, Jason and Jenn attended Old Dominion University at the same time (Jenn earned a degree in Psychology) but they didn’t know each other there. They met the year after graduation. They married in 1994 and have two daughters. Kaitlin Duley (27) lives in Winchester and has experience in computers and Hannah Duley (25) graduated VCU and lives in Richmond.

Fun fact: When the Duleys met, Jason was a front-man in a local rock band. During a break one evening, at a restaurant-bar where he was playing a gig, he sat down next to Jenn who was with a large group of friends. They started dating and felt they were a great match from the start. “It was Jennifer who suggested we go to church together. After a few months, I felt called into ministry!”

While we will miss Jason and Jennifer, we know they will be happy at their new church in Winchester. It’s nearer the Appalachians, after all. When he’s not out running a marathon or a double marathon or a marathon up the side of some mountain (Jason is a dedicated extreme sportsman), he and Jenn will spend time together creating vegan Mexican dishes and visiting with friends and family. 

Ten years ago, in 2014, Pastor Jason arrived at Galilee with some words that have become a defining slogan for our church. He told us that we were ordinary people endowed with an extraordinary purpose—to know Christ and to make Christ known. Thank you Jason. We will always keep those words, that purpose, and your family in our hearts.
