A small group of Galilee members had a wonderful time at the Dulles mall on Saturday. They were volunteering at Anna Sudha Community Kitchens. Ten volunteers, including two from the Chapel, spent the morning preparing food for a fundraising buffet and came away moved by the experience of serving neighbors in mission.
Anna Sudha receives donations and cooks food that is distributed to folks in need through schools, houses of worship, and area shelters. Our group helped with a wide range of kitchen tasks:
Rihet, the kitchen manager, could not have been more welcoming as he guided the team through their work. He shared that “Anna Sudha” is not a person’s name, but an Indian phrase that means “spreading love thru food.” That’s something that people in all cultures can relate to, because cooking for others just feels good. As one volunteer put it: “We felt we were making a difference.”
This initial trip to the nonprofit Anna Sudha Community Kitchens was a test, while our regular feeding missions are on summer hiatus, to see if the kitchen is a good fit for our volunteers. We’re considering other venues of ministry, too, so stay tuned.
