Every April, Galilee volunteers work with the nonprofit group Rebuilding Together to perform home repairs for those in need in our community. This work shines a spotlight on the cause of safe and healthy housing for everyone and demonstrates a commitment to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

This year, volunteers led by Galilee’s own Mike Tucker assisted a partially disabled homeowner in Countryside who needed several improvement tasks completed on her townhouse.

Mike Tucker tells us, “It is great to finally get back out and provide these services to those who need them! I may have been a little too exuberant this year: I coordinated three teams of volunteers, two from work and one from Galilee. But with all of the wonderful help, we got an amazing amount of work done.”

Here is what the volunteers tackled: 

• Filled in voids at the front stoop
• Installed a ceiling fan
• Cleaned out front and rear flower beds
• Repaired rear gate latch
• Replaced rear wood deck stair treads & railings
• Replaced door on shed
• Installed new solar lights
• Trimmed tree branches
• Patched drywall
• Added door handles to closet doors
• Painted kitchen walls and ceiling
• Cleaned out dryer vent
• Still to do: Replace dishwasher
• Still to do: Fix leak under kitchen faucet

That’s a lot of work! And a great deal of generosity on the part of the volunteers who responded to this need. If you’re wondering how the Rebuilding Together recipients are chosen, it’s an application process. The projects are selected from homeowner-submitted applications or referred by assistance organizations for persons with disabilities and senior citizens in Loudoun County. This is neighbors looking out for one another, which is how we build community.
