We had about 75 guests at our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner on March 4 and none of them left hungry. Although after the pancake eating contest, a few of them left miserably stuffed. 

Shrove Tuesday is known by a lot of names–Mardis Gras, Fat Tuesday, Carnival, Pancake Day–but throughout the world, it’s significance is the same. It is a celebratory feast, a party, when we let the good times roll before the more somber and reflective season of Lent.

In that spirit, Pastor Steven Carr led us in a series of games and diversions. We had a pancake race for kids and for adults, speeding across the gym with a pancake on a spatula. There was a pancake toss, where participants paired to see how far they could flip a pancake from one plate to another. And finally there was the pancake eating contest, which was won by Ryan McDonnell.

Congratulations to Ryan for eating 15-16 pancakes (estimates vary) 

Our thanks go to the Galilee Men’s Group for their griddle skills, to Julie Logan for acting as the principal organizer of Shrove Tuesday and all our monthly Go and Be Fellowship Suppers, and to Deb Benigni who ordered our special treat of three King Cakes from Gambino’s Bakery in New Orleans.
