We’ve got a bumper crop of great events coming up each Sunday this month at Galilee. You’ll want to mark your calendar so you don’t miss Communion Sunday, Mother’s Day/Youth Sunday, Confirmation, Pentecost, and more!

Sunday, May 7

The first Sunday in May (or any month) is Communion Sunday, when we share the Lord’s Supper. Galilee supports a theology of the open table, where all are welcome to partake of the body and blood of Christ. You do not have to be a church member, you do not have to be a saint, you do not even have to be a Methodist. If you feel the pull of a closer relationship with Christ, receive communion in the meal instituted by Jesus as the centering sacrament of the universal church.

May 7 is also Faith Emblem Sunday, when we’ll recognize the young scouts who have earned their Faith Emblem badge. These scouts have studied diligently in classes led by Galilee volunteers Deb Benigni, Kristen Jenkins, Rebecca Makowski, Nicole Rhoads and coordinated by our Family Ministry assistant Vanessa Wells.

Sunday, May 14

Mother’s Day is, after Christmas and Easter, one of the highest attended Sunday services of the year. It’s not a surprise! Moms know what is good for the family.

This Mother’s Day, May 14, will be Youth Sunday at Galilee. Our service will be led by members of the Galilee Youth ministry. Our worship leader will be Josh Bolton, Anya Jenkins will read the scripture, Luke Makowski and Hailey Thompson will deliver messages, and other youth will serve as ushers, greeters, acolytes, and stewards. 

Finally, there will be a ministry update by Emmanuel Nabieu. Our church supported Nabs as an orphan growing up at the Child Rescue Center in Sierra Leone. Now he has become a leader at Helping Children Worldwide and other laudable organizations. Nabs will brief us on how we can help mothers and families in Sierra Leone and will be signing copies of  his new memoir, My Long Journey Back Home. Copies will be available for $20 and will make a nice gift for mom.

Sunday, May 21

The third Sunday of May will be Confirmation Sunday. Join us as we celebrate the Confirmation Class of 2023, who are taking the important step of confirming their Christian faith and joining the church as full members. There are seven young people who will be confirmed.

After the service, we invite anyone who wants to help to visit our Backpack Buddies pantry in the original wing of the church as we pack weekend meals for food insecure students. It’s an easy way to get involved with a practical and satisfying ministry.

Sunday, May 28

Perhaps the biggest Sunday of the month is Pentecost Sunday—the birthday of the church. We’ll conclude our worship series based on the flawed but faithful disciple Peter on this special Sunday, which is appropriate because it is at the original Pentecost (fifty days after the resurrection of Christ) that Peter famously preached while filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

It’s a tradition at Galilee to wear red on Pentecost. This year, Pentecost Sunday falls on Memorial Day weekend, so you can combine your red clothing with some white and blue.
